OUR PROGRESS

Since starting in August of 2021, End the Uyghur Genocide has made significant strides in achieving our end goal of federal legislation. Read on to discover more of our story.

OUR STORY

In the summer of 2021, our project founder attended several workshops about the Uyghur genocide, where she heard about the internment camps in depth for the first time. Inspired to do something to raise awareness about this atrocity and motivated by the gravity of the issue, she started the project End the Uyghur Genocide. Working with other youth from Arkansas, the project has had considerable progress since it's beginning in August of 2021.

Since starting this project, we have launched several social media accounts including Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and this website. During the beginning of this project, we also spent copious amounts of time researching the issue and becoming familiar with the situation we were striving to improve.

In February, we hosted a virtual event called Revealing the Uyghur Genocide featuring Zubayra Shamseden from the Uyghur World Congress.

Once spring hit, we began working on a short film and play called "Injustice Unseen." An entirely youth-led production, this play portrayed a Uyghur woman's experience as a detainee in an internment camp. The play was written, filmed, performed, directed, edited, and produced entirely by high school students. The story was loosely based off a true Uyghur woman's story and can be viewed on our Youtube channel.

As the summer of 2022 started, End the Uyghur Genocide joined the coalition Citizens First Congress. We were then voted to be one of the five short-term priorities in the upcoming legislative session and consistently worked to draft and pass state legislation. In March of 2022, SR34 passed the Arkansas Senate. This was a huge milestone in our project and the overall progress of this obtaining justice for this issue. View the SR34 page of our website for more information.

Since the beginning, we have grown considerably on social media and in the community. Our effort to educate has led us to greater opportunities to spread the impact of our work. Read on to learn more about some of our community involvement and specific partners.

Community Engagement

Below are several opportunities our project has had to engage with the community and gain support, while also educating others about this issue.

PARTNERS

Community partners have been an essential part of the success of this project, and we are honored to have worked with so many. We have had the privilege of working with Citizens First Congress, Arkansas Youth Coalition for Social Change, the Uyghur Human Rights Project, and the Athenai Institute, along with many other individual activists and community groups.
